Gabby and Alex's Old City Engagement Session Photos in Philadelphia

A Beautiful Fall Day in Old City Philadelphia

When Gabby and Alex reached out about their engagement photos, they were worried. The government shutdown had closed many of Philadelphia’s national parks in Old City. But I assured them that after nearly ten years of taking photos in this area, I knew plenty of spots that would give them the look they wanted without needing access to the closed parks.

I’m so glad we went ahead with our plans! We caught the very last day of those gorgeous fall colors that make Old City Philadelphia such a perfect backdrop for engagement photos. The historic streets, brick buildings, and cobblestone alleys gave us plenty of options for amazing shots.

Why Old City Philadelphia Makes for Great Engagement Photos

Old City has a charm you can’t find anywhere else. The mix of history and urban style creates a perfect setting for couples who want engagement photos with character.

What Makes Old City Special

  • Cobblestone streets that look amazing in photos
  • Historic buildings with tons of texture
  • Alley paths with beautiful light
  • Views of the Delaware River
  • Mix of old and new architecture

The area around Independence Mall offers so many different looks within just a few blocks. We can go from colonial-style buildings to modern urban settings in minutes, which means more variety in your photos.

Highlights from Gabby and Alex’s Session

Gabby and Alex were so relaxed in front of the camera. The fall leaves added pops of orange and red that made their photos extra special.

We wandered to some of my favorite hidden spots – little corners most tourists never find but photographers love. The brick walls and iron details made for perfect frames around this sweet couple.

The best part was when we found a spot with golden light streaming between buildings. Those became some of their favorite shots from the whole session!

5 Tips for Planning Your Own Old City Engagement Session

Planning an engagement photo session in Old City? Here’s how to make it great:

1. Pick the Right Time of Day

Morning or late afternoon gives you the best light. The “golden hour” (about 1-2 hours before sunset) is my top pick for that warm, romantic glow.

2. Consider the Season

Each season offers something different:

  • Spring: Fresh blooms and green trees
  • Summer: Vibrant streets with lots of activity
  • Fall: Amazing colors and comfortable temps (like Gabby and Alex had!)
  • Winter: Less crowded streets and cool, crisp light

3. Wear Something Timeless

Clothes that feel like “you” but a bit dressed up work best. Gabby wore a simple dress that moved nicely in the breeze, while Alex went with classic pants and a button-up that won’t look dated years from now.

4. Plan for Walking

Old City means lots of walking on uneven surfaces. Bring comfy shoes to wear between photo spots!

5. Have a Backup Plan

Weather in Philly can change fast. Have a plan B like ducking into a coffee shop for some indoor shots if needed.
